NCAA denies Cincinnati QB's appeal for more eligibility

CINCINNATI -- The NCAA won't reconsider its decision to deny former Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk another year of eligibility.

The NCAA initially turned downed Mauk's request for a sixth year of eligibility in February. But Mauk made a new appeal on grounds that he was hurt as a freshman at Wake Forest when he sat out as a redshirt.

Mauk missed all but one game in 2006 at Wake Forest with a shoulder injury. He transferred to Cincinnati and led the Bearcats to 10 victories last season.

Under NCAA rules, a player has four years of eligibility that must be used in five years.

Cincinnati said Wednesday that Mauk is continuing with appeals in hopes of getting another year of eligibility restored.

The problem with Mauk's case is that he redshirted in 2003 as an elective non-playing redshirt. If the 2003 redshirt was medical both Mauk and Wake Forest should have ensured to designate it as such. Apparently Wake Forest is supporting Mauk's appeal but has no documentation of Mauk being injured. Without documentation, and considering that Mauk and Wake Forest designated him as a non-playing reds ...(more)

The kid was hurt, and wants to play another year of college football. What's wrong with that? It seems like all the time players are blasted by the fans and the media for leaving early, then when one kid wants to play another year(with a reasonable excuse), he's denied. The NCAA is a farce. They have crazy rules, and it's all a money making scam. Give the kid another year.
