SPORTS APPRECIATION DAY: 'When I became a fan'

What is Sports Appreciation Day? To understand the what, you need to grasp the why -- starting with an Onion headline from last July: Barry Bonds home-run scandal somehow becomes feel-good sports story of summer.

Timeline: The S.A.D. summer of 2007

Funny -- and true. Barry Bonds' march into history, though under the cloud of steroid suspicion, seemed tame in the summer of '07.

Tim Donaghy's gambling ties cast doubt on the validity of NBA wins and losses. Michael Vick admitted funding a dogfighting ring. Pacman Jones continued his incarceration odyssey.

Wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife and son, then himself. Week 1 of the NFL season saw Kevin Everett sustain a spinal cord injury. The fact that he would walk again makes the image of his motionless body no less terrifying.

During this time, perhaps you asked yourself, Why did I ever like sports in the first place?

That's the why. As for the what -- S.A.D. is therapy. One year removed from an awful summer, it's a way of validating sports fandom by going back to when it all began. Therapy can be helped along by a support group. Ours is great: CBSSports.com columnists and staffers, CBS Sports broadcasters, athletes and you. So let the healing begin.

watching him steal home runs for others, as well as that awesome moment with a home run of his own in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series.  That's what made me into a sports fan.

Being a big fan of the original AFL and its innovative rules and colorful teams, I was entranced by Leslie Visser's recollection of '00' Jimmy Otto and her opportunity to stand next to this behemoth of a man what with her being ten. As a huge Raider fan, despite their recent dysfunction, I was happy to see her first arrow of love for sports struck and all but sealed standing ne ...(more)

Watching Dale Murphy play hard every day despite playing on extremely poor teams and being a role model for kids back in my day was when I became a fan of sports in general.

Watching Scott Stevens knock opposing players out cold with a clean check during the Stanlely Cup playoffs is when I brought my fanhood to a new level.

Both are the types of players I would be proud to ...(more)

I just finished reading all of the articles and I have to say they were all great. All of you really seemed to pour your hearts into them and it showed. The imagery and memories invoked were awesome. I just wish I would have saved a few for tomorrow but I'm sure a lot of the posted messages will be just as fun to read. Kudos to all of you!

This Series had it all.  I was 12 years old; little league player; I went straight for for the sports pages before I poured my milk on my cereal.  I was hooked from then on!

(POLL)
Ok we have to put up with these guys all year, now it's our turn. If these guys were on your Fantasy Team who would you cut? That's the poll, but also who'd be a keeper, or who what other sportswriter would you trade them for? Personally, I'd trade most of them for a good sandwich.. but I feel the same way about most of my friends.
