Ginobili looks good in return as Argentina wins tuneup

BEIJING -- Manu Ginobili appeared well recovered from an ankle injury as Argentina defeated Angola 112-86 in a warmup game Thursday before the opening of the Olympic basketball tournament against Lithuania.

The San Antonio Spurs star moved without problems during the match and said he was surprised at his quick recovery.

"I'm doing much better than I thought I would be now," a relaxed Ginobili said after the match. He indicated that he was ready to join Argentina on Sunday against Lithuania as the team begins defending the gold medal it won four years ago in Athens.

"The evolution has been good and I am much more tranquil now in the face of what comes next," Ginobili said.

Ginobili injured his left ankle during an NBA match in May that threatened his trip to the Olympics.

Argentina's preparation for the games included two losses to Spain and one to Lithuania. Argentina then went on to win the Diamond Ball pre-Olympic tournament with victories over Iran, Serbia and Australia.

Argentina should prove to be USA's toughest match being the defending gold medal winners to go along with the fact that they have Manu Ginobli and many other good players including, Luis Scola and Andreas Nocioni. This team has also been playing with each other for a while and have great chemistry.

Angola isn't a great team and they gave up nearly 90 points to them. That kind of defense won't get it don't against the big boys. Spain beat them twice is the tuneup. Spain is a good team though and without ...(more)
